As well as for lines and wrinkles , Botox can be used for hyperhidrosis (too much sweating). Excess sweating can be a socially disabling problem for many people. Fortunately, there is effective treatment!
Hyperhidrosis / excessive sweating can interfere with daily activities due to its severity. The sweating may affect the whole of your body, or it may only affect certain areas. Commonly affected areas include:
Both sides of the body are usually affected equally – for example, both feet or both hands.
Botulinum toxin (Botox) is a natural, purified protein which blocks the secretion of the chemical that is responsible for “turning on” the body’s sweat glands.
The treatment involves 20 or so tiny injections into each armpit to combat armpit sweating. It is not particularly uncomfortable for most people. Botulinum works well for excess sweating of other areas as well, including scalp, forehead, hands and feet.
The Hyperhidrosis UK website contains very useful information and other ideas about treatments which can help, including iontophoresis (small electrical current passed through the skin of affected areas).
