At Freyja Medical, we believe in empowering our patients with knowledge about their skin conditions. One such condition that we often encounter in our clinics is Seborrhoeic Keratoses, (or seborrhoeic keratosis if it is just one!), also known as seborrhoeic warts, a common, benign skin growth that appears as we age. Understanding what they are and the easy, safe methods of removal can provide peace of mind and clear skin.
What are Seborrhoeic Keratoses?
Seborrhoeic Keratoses, often referred to as the “ageing warts,” are non-cancerous skin growths that commonly occur in middle age or later. They can vary in colour, from light tan to black, and are usually round or oval-shaped. They often have a waxy, scaly, or slightly elevated appearance and can be found anywhere on the body, except for the palms and soles.
While Seborrhoeic Keratoses are harmless and often require no treatment, some people choose to have them removed for cosmetic reasons or because they become irritated or catch on clothing.
Simple and Effective Seborrhoeic Wart Removal Techniques
At Freyja Medical, we offer two straightforward methods for removing Seborrhoeic Keratoses: cryotherapy and shave curettage.
Cryotherapy: If the Seborrhoeic Keratoses are small and thin, cryotherapy is an excellent option. This procedure involves applying liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy the growths. The procedure is quick, usually lasting just a few minutes. Over the course of a few days to weeks, the treated SKs will crust over and gradually fall off, leaving healthy skin behind.
Shave Curettage: For thicker Seborrhoeic Keratoses, we recommend shave curettage. This procedure involves numbing the area around the growth with a local anesthetic. Once the area is numb, our dermatologists will gently shave off the growth using a specialized surgical instrument. The procedure is simple, swift, and leaves minimal scarring.
