Additional Information About Skin Surgery

Moles can be removed in different ways, depending on their location and appearance. The treatment options available to you will be discussed during your consultation with one of our skin doctors.

CRYOTHERAPY

Cryotherapy uses cold treatment to remove or ‘freeze’ the mole. This works for minor skin blemishes and warts but is less good for larger lesions.

SKIN LESION & MOLE REMOVAL – Shave excision

Some types of mole can be removed from the face and body using a shave removal technique which involves removing it with a special blade and cauterising the base. The treatment area will be numbed with anaesthesia and a small pink mark may be left where the mole once was, but this should fade over time.

SKIN LESION & MOLE REMOVAL – Excision

Excision mole removal works by completely removing the mole by cutting it out with a scalpel, along with a small area of surrounding healthy tissue. The area is treated with local anaesthetic and then the mole itself is removed along with a small area of normal skin. The wound is then stitched up to close it.

What Do We Treat?

Our skin surgery procedures are designed to address a range of concerns, from the removal of moles, seborrhoeic keratosis, and skin tags to more complex treatments to address skin cancers, cysts, lipomas, and other skin growths.

We also offer treatment for scars and other cosmetic concerns to help you achieve a smooth and even complexion.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Please reach us at [email protected] if you cannot find an answer to your question.
How do I know if I need skin surgery?

If you have a skin condition that you are worried about, that is causing discomfort, or is affecting your appearance, you may benefit from skin surgery.

We recommend scheduling a consultation with our experienced surgeons to discuss your options.

What type of skin problems can you remove?

Our dermatology doctors are hugely experienced skin surgeons with many years of NHS surgical practice. As such, the range of problems that our surgeons can address is vary wide! Some examples are:

  • Skin Cancers
  • Moles
  • Skin tags
  • Skin cysts
  • Warts
  • Lipomas (fatty lumps)
  • and much more…
Does mole removal hurt?

When we remove moles and skin lesions the area is thoroughly cleaned and a local anaesthetic is used so that the procedure itself is painless.

How long does it take to recover from skin surgery?

The recovery time for skin surgery procedures can vary depending on the individual and the procedure performed.

In general, you can expect to resume your normal activities within a few days, although you may need to avoid certain activities for a period of time.

However, these risks are usually minimal and can be managed with appropriate care and follow-up.

Is it safe to have my mole removed at Freyja Medical?

Our doctors have a huge amount of experience in skin surgery and dermatology diagnosis developed over the many years of service to the NHS. We also have regularly been asked by the NHS to assist them in seeing patients to reduce waiting list times. We are regulated by the same bodies as NHS hospitals (Healthcare Inspectorate Wales & Care Quality Commission).

I have moles that I know are harmless but I want removed for cosmetic purposes. Can you help?

Absolutely! Unlike the NHS, who only remove moles if they are potentially dangerous,  we’re used to removing moles for cosmetic reasons. Your doctor will discuss this in detail with you during your initial consultation.

How do I know which type of mole removal surgery is right for me?

During your consultation with our skin specialist doctors, your mole will be assessed and the right treatment option will be recommended for you. This will depend on the medical assessment and location of the mole.

I have several moles, can you remove more than one at a time?

Yes. During your initial consultation, your doctor can fully assess all of your moles and give you guidance on their removal. You’ll also be fully advised of the costs involved with your treatment and any histology (microscopic skin cell examination) costs.
