Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma can appear in several different ways. It may present as:

• A rough, scaly red patch
• A firm, raised lump
• A crusted or wart-like growth
• A sore that does not heal
• A lesion that bleeds or becomes tender

Because SCC can resemble other skin conditions, any persistent or changing lesion should be assessed by a dermatologist.

Squamous cell carcinoma is generally very treatable when diagnosed early. However, unlike basal cell carcinoma, it has the potential to grow into deeper tissues and, in some cases, spread to nearby lymph nodes or other parts of the body if left untreated. Early diagnosis significantly reduces this risk.

Yes. While most squamous cell carcinomas are successfully treated before this occurs, SCC can spread if diagnosis or treatment is delayed. The risk is higher for larger tumours, those on the lips or ears, recurrent cancers, or in people with weakened immune systems.

The most common cause is cumulative exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Other risk factors include:

• Previous sunburns
• Use of sunbeds
• Fair skin
• Increasing age
• A weakened immune system
• Previous skin cancer
• Certain chronic wounds or scars

A dermatologist will examine the lesion during your consultation and assess whether it has features suggestive of SCC. In many cases, a biopsy or complete surgical removal is recommended to confirm the diagnosis under the microscope.

Treatment depends on the size, depth and location of the cancer. Surgical removal is the most common and effective treatment for most SCC’s. Your dermatologist will discuss the most appropriate treatment plan based on your individual circumstances.

Most squamous cell carcinomas are cured with appropriate treatment. However, some can recur, and having one SCC increases your risk of developing further skin cancers in the future. Regular skin examinations and protecting your skin from UV exposure remain important.

Squamous cell carcinoma often grows more quickly than basal cell carcinoma. Some lesions enlarge gradually over several months, while others may grow more rapidly. Any new or changing skin lesion should be assessed promptly rather than monitored at home.

Both are common forms of non-melanoma skin cancer caused mainly by long-term UV exposure. Basal cell carcinoma usually grows slowly and very rarely spreads, whereas squamous cell carcinoma is generally more aggressive and has a greater potential to invade deeper tissues or spread if left untreated. Both require prompt assessment by a dermatologist.
