Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
At Freyja Medical, Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) may be recommended for suitable skin conditions, including actinic keratoses and Bowen’s disease. Our dermatology team can assess your skin during a consultation in Wrexham, Nantwich, Chester or Shrewsbury and advise whether PDT is appropriate for you.
PDT treatment is carried out at our Wrexham clinic, using a light-sensitive medication and a specific light source to target abnormal or sun-damaged skin cells.
No GP or NHS referral is required. You can book directly with our team for a thorough assessment, clear diagnosis and personalised treatment plan.
What is photodynamic therapy and how does it work?
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment that uses a light-sensitive medication and a special light source to destroy abnormal or damaged skin cells while limiting damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
The medication is applied directly to the area being treated and left for a period of time to allow it to be absorbed by the abnormal cells. The area is then exposed to a specific wavelength of light, which activates the medication and causes a reaction that destroys the targeted cells.
PDT can be used to treat certain skin conditions, including actinic keratoses (sun-damaged areas) and Bowen’s disease.
The suitability of PDT depends on the condition, its location and other individual factors, so an assessment is required before treatment is recommended.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is photodynamic therapy?
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment that combines a light-sensitive medication with a specific light source to target abnormal or damaged skin cells. It is used in dermatology to treat certain precancerous and cancerous skin conditions.
What is photodynamic therapy used to treat?
Photodynamic therapy can be used to treat several skin conditions, including actinic keratoses (solar keratoses), Bowen’s disease and some superficial basal cell carcinomas (BCCs). Whether PDT is suitable will depend on factors such as the diagnosis, size and location of the affected area.
How does photodynamic therapy work?
During PDT treatment, a photosensitising medication is applied to the affected skin and allowed time to absorb. The area is then exposed to a specific light source, which activates the medication and destroys targeted abnormal cells.
Is photodynamic therapy used for actinic keratosis?
Yes. Photodynamic therapy for actinic keratosis may be recommended when treating areas of sun-damaged skin, particularly where there are multiple actinic keratoses within the same area. A dermatologist can assess your skin and advise whether PDT is appropriate.
Is photodynamic therapy painful?
PDT can cause discomfort while the skin is exposed to the light. People may experience sensations such as burning, stinging or tingling, although the level of discomfort varies between individuals and treatment areas.
What happens after photodynamic therapy?
Following photodynamic therapy, the treated skin is likely to become red and sore. Swelling, crusting, peeling or blistering can also occur as the area heals. You will be given PDT aftercare advice explaining how to look after and protect your skin following treatment.
How long does it take to heal after PDT?
Healing time following PDT varies depending on the condition treated, the size and location of the treatment area and your individual response. Redness and other skin reactions can continue for several days, with the appearance of the skin gradually improving as it heals.
How many PDT treatments will I need?
Some conditions may require more than one photodynamic therapy session. The number of treatments recommended will depend on your diagnosis and how the affected skin responds to treatment.
What are the side effects of photodynamic therapy?
Common side effects of PDT include redness, soreness, swelling, crusting and peeling of the treated skin. Changes in skin colour and other reactions can also occur. Your dermatologist will discuss the potential risks and expected recovery before treatment.
