What causes skin lesions?
A skin lesion is a general term used to describe an area of skin that differs from the skin around it. They can vary considerably in their appearance, size, colour and texture and can occur anywhere on the body.
There are many different types and causes of skin lesions. Some are present from birth, while others develop over time due to ageing, sun exposure, infection, inflammation or changes within the skin.
Many lesions are benign (non-cancerous). However, some changes to the skin can be associated with precancerous conditions or skin cancer. For this reason, a new, changing, unusual or persistent lesion should be professionally assessed if you are concerned about it.
Different Types of Skin Lesions
There are many different conditions that can present as a lesion. Examples include:
- Moles
- Skin tags
- Cysts
- Seborrhoeic keratoses
- Solar (actinic) keratoses
- Warts
- Lipomas
- Dermatofibromas
- Benign skin growths
- Basal cell carcinoma (BCC)
- Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)
- Bowen’s disease
- Melanoma
Because different skin conditions can sometimes have similar appearances, it is not always possible to determine what a lesion is by looking at photographs online. A dermatology assessment can help establish a diagnosis and whether treatment or further investigation is required.
Skin Lesions Treatments
Dermatology Consultation
If you have a skin lesion that concerns you, a dermatology consultation allows the area to be professionally assessed.
Your dermatologist will ask how long the lesion has been present and whether you have noticed changes in its size, shape, colour, texture or symptoms. They will then examine the area and may use a dermatoscope where appropriate.
Depending on the findings, your dermatologist may provide reassurance, discuss treatment options or recommend further investigation. If the diagnosis is uncertain, a biopsy or removal may be recommended so the tissue can be examined in a laboratory.
Skin Lesion Removal
Some skin lesions can be removed where clinically appropriate. Removal may be recommended for further investigation, because a lesion is causing symptoms or irritation, or if you would prefer a benign lesion to be removed.
The most appropriate method depends on the type, size and location of the lesion. If skin surgery is recommended, your dermatologist will explain the procedure, potential risks, healing and expected cosmetic outcome.
Where necessary, removed tissue can be sent for histological examination to confirm the diagnosis.

What is a skin lesion?
A skin lesion is an area of skin that looks or feels different from the surrounding skin. This can include a lump, bump, patch, growth, sore, mole or other change in the appearance or texture of the skin. “Skin lesion” is a broad term rather than a specific diagnosis.
Are all skin lesions cancerous?
No. Many lesions are completely benign and do not pose a risk to your health. However, precancerous conditions and skin cancers can also present as skin lesions, which is why new, changing, unusual or persistent lesions may require professional assessment.
What do skin lesions look like?
Skin lesions can have many different appearances. They may be flat or raised, smooth or rough, pigmented or skin-coloured. Some may appear as lumps, patches, sores or growths.
Their appearance alone does not necessarily indicate what has caused them, so professional assessment may be required to establish a diagnosis.
When should I have a skin lesion checked?
Consider arranging an assessment if you notice a new or unusual lesion, particularly if it:
- Changes in size, shape or colour
- Bleeds or crusts repeatedly
- Does not heal
- Becomes painful, itchy or tender
- Changes noticeably over time
- Looks different from your other moles or skin lesions
- Is causing you concern
If you are unsure about a change in your skin, a dermatologist can examine it and advise whether further investigation is necessary.
How are skin lesions diagnosed?
Diagnosis usually begins with a clinical examination by a dermatologist. Depending on the type of lesion, a dermatoscope may also be used to examine the area in greater detail.
In some cases, a biopsy or removal may be recommended so that tissue can be examined under a microscope and the diagnosis confirmed.
Can skin lesions be removed?
Yes, many types of lesions can be removed, although whether removal is appropriate depends on the diagnosis, location and individual circumstances.
Your dermatologist will first assess the lesion and explain whether removal is recommended and which treatment method would be most appropriate.
Can benign skin lesions be removed?
Some benign lesions can be removed if they are causing irritation, catching on clothing, affecting everyday life or if removal is otherwise considered appropriate.
Your dermatologist can confirm whether the lesion appears benign and discuss suitable treatment options.
What is the difference between a skin lesion and a mole?
A mole is one particular type of skin lesion. The term “skin lesion” is much broader and can describe many different changes or growths affecting the skin, including moles, cysts, skin tags, keratoses and skin cancers.
Should I book a dermatology consultation or a mole check for a skin lesion?
This depends on the nature of your concern. If you have a mole or pigmented lesion that you are concerned may have changed or could represent skin cancer, a mole check may be appropriate.
For other lumps, bumps, growths, rashes or skin lesions where you are unsure of the diagnosis, a dermatology consultation may be more suitable.
If you are unsure which appointment to book, please contact our team for guidance.
Can you tell if a skin lesion is cancerous just by looking at it?
An experienced dermatologist can often identify characteristic features of different skin lesions during examination. However, appearance alone cannot always provide a definitive diagnosis.
Where there is uncertainty or suspicious features are identified, your dermatologist may recommend a biopsy or removal so that the tissue can be examined histologically.
