What’s the Difference between Botox and Fillers?

It’s important to understand the differences between Botox & dermal fillers, what they are designed to achieve, and how they work.

Regardless of the chosen treatment, both aim to refresh the skin and maintain a natural, youthful appearance when applied correctly.

Botox works to relax the muscles that cause lines, reducing the movement to help reduce their appearance. With consistent use, it can actually train the muscles to stay relaxed, thereby softening existing wrinkles and preventing new ones from developing.

In contrast, fillers operate differently to address various forms of facial ageing. They are primarily intended to address static wrinkles and lines, which remain visible even when the face is at rest. They accomplish this through a supportive and volumising effect.

What is Botox?

Botox is a brand name for a type of purified protein that is injected into the muscles to temporarily reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Other brands licensed in the UK are Azzalure and Bocouture.

How long does treatment last?

The benefits initially last 3-4 months, but after a few treatments they tend to last longer and the repeat treatment time can stretch out to every 6-8 months in a large number of people.

Is Botox safe?

Botox is considered safe when administered by a licensed and experienced professional. It has been approved by the MHRA in the UK and the FDA in America for cosmetic use and has a long track record of safety.

Will I have a frozen face?!

Absolutely not!

The aim should not be to achieve the ‘frozen’ look that many associated with Botox injections in the past. Instead, the goal is to target small specific muscles responsible for unwanted lines and wrinkles only.

Botox injection requires technique sensitivity. A licensed, trained, and medically expert individual in facial anatomy can deliver subtle results. As a result, you’ll look like yourself—only with less noticeable lines. No one should be able to tell you’ve had anything done.

Concerns about looking ‘frozen’ or fake often arise when considering Botox treatment. However, the results speak for themselves when you consult with a true expert. You can achieve a more relaxed, fresher appearance while still looking like yourself.

Where can Botox be used?

The most common sites for treatments include the areas between the brows where lines form when we frown, the crow’s feet (laughter lines), and the horizontal lines across our forehead that become more prominent when we raise our eyebrows.

Many practitioners adhere to these ‘3 areas’ as they are so prevalent that most price lists list them as standard treatments. However, with more experience and skill, the toxin can be used in various other ways to produce fantastic yet subtle results.

The treatment can be precisely placed to achieve a brow lift when the eyebrows sit low over the eyes or shaping is needed. Smoker’s lines around the mouth can be softened if the injector is experienced enough to avoid affecting the muscles involved in smiling. A downward turn of the corners of the mouth can be corrected with a gentle relaxation of a specific muscle to counteract a ‘frowning’ appearance. Even a stringy-looking neck can be improved with Botox by treating the thick cord-like bands that can form arising from the platysma muscle. Treatment in this area can provide a subtle lift to the lower face as the muscle pulling downwards is relaxed.

This list is not exhaustive!

How does Botox work?

Botulinum Toxin, when injected into a muscle, temporarily relaxes it by blocking nerve impulses. As the nerve impulses are blocked the muscle is temporarily unable to contract as much which means that active wrinkles are relaxed. As a result, this gives the overlying skin a softer, smoother appearance.

Is Botox painful?

The injections are typically well-tolerated and do not require any anesthesia or downtime. However, some patients may experience mild discomfort or a slight pinching sensation during the injection.

How often do I need treatments?

The frequency of Botox treatments can vary depending on the individual and the treatment area. Typically, people choose to have Botox treatments every three to four months to maintain their results.

Are there any side effects from Botox?

The most common side effects of Botox include temporary redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site. Rarely, more serious side effects may occur, but these are usually temporary and subside within a few days.
