What happens during a mole check?
1. Medical history and your concerns
Your dermatologist will discuss any moles or skin lesions you’re concerned about, including changes you’ve noticed. They’ll also ask about relevant factors such as your personal and family history of skin cancer and previous sun exposure.
2. Examination of your skin
Your dermatologist will examine your visible moles and skin lesions, paying particular attention to anything that looks unusual or has changed.
3. Dermatoscopic examination
Where appropriate, your dermatologist will use a dermatoscope to examine individual moles or lesions more closely. This provides a magnified view of structures within the skin that cannot be seen as clearly with the naked eye.
4. Explanation of your findings
Your dermatologist will talk you through what they’ve found. In many cases, no treatment will be necessary, but they’ll explain if any moles or lesions require monitoring or further investigation.
5. Your next steps
You’ll leave with a clear plan. Depending on the findings, this could mean no further action, monitoring a particular lesion, or arranging a biopsy or removal for further investigation.
What is included in the cost of your appointment?
Your consultation fee covers your assessment with one of our dermatologists, including examination of your moles and the use of dermoscopy where clinically appropriate, as well as advice about your findings and recommended next steps.
If a mole or lesion requires removal, biopsy, histology or another procedure, this is not included in the consultation fee. Your dermatologist will explain any recommended treatment and associated costs before you decide whether to proceed.

What happens after my mole check?
Nothing concerning is found
Your dermatologist may simply recommend continuing to monitor your skin and advise you when another professional check would be appropriate.
A mole needs monitoring
If a lesion isn’t currently considered suspicious but would benefit from surveillance, your dermatologist will explain what monitoring is recommended.
A mole or lesion needs removing
If your dermatologist believes a lesion should be removed or biopsied, they will explain the recommended procedure and the associated costs before treatment is arranged.
Further testing identifies skin cancer
If histology confirms a skin cancer, we’ll explain the diagnosis and the next steps in your care. Where appropriate, our dermatology team can provide skin cancer surgery and ongoing management.

How to Book a Mole Check
Booking your mole check is simple. You can book online at a time that suits you, or contact our clinic directly and our team will be happy to arrange your appointment.
What is a professional mole check?
A professional mole check is an examination of your moles and skin lesions to look for features that may require further investigation or monitoring. At Freyja Medical, mole checks are carried out by dermatologists with experience in diagnosing skin cancer, including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).
Your dermatologist will discuss your medical history and any particular areas you are concerned about before examining your skin. They may also use a dermatoscope to examine individual moles or lesions in greater detail.
What happens during a mole check?
Your dermatologist will first discuss any moles or skin changes you have noticed, along with relevant medical history and factors that may affect your risk of skin cancer.
They will then examine your visible moles and skin lesions, using a dermatoscope where appropriate to look more closely at particular areas. Your dermatologist will explain their findings and advise whether anything requires monitoring, further investigation, biopsy or removal.
Will the dermatologist check all of my moles or just the one I am worried about?
Our mole check consultation is designed to assess your visible moles, rather than only the individual mole that prompted you to book. However, you should always point out any particular mole, lesion or skin change that has concerned you so your dermatologist can pay particular attention to it.
What are the signs of a suspicious mole?
Changes in a mole’s size, shape or colour can be warning signs that should be assessed. Other changes such as bleeding, crusting or persistent itching can also warrant investigation. The ABCDE method – Asymmetry, Border, Colour, Diameter and Evolving – can help you recognise some of the features associated with melanoma.
However, not every melanoma follows the ABCDE pattern. If you notice a new, changing or unusual mole or skin lesion, it is sensible to have it professionally assessed rather than trying to diagnose it yourself.
Should I get a mole checked even if it hasn't changed?
Yes. A changing mole is one reason to seek assessment, but it isn’t the only reason. You may also want professional advice about a new or unusual mole, a lesion that looks different from your other moles, or something on your skin that you simply aren’t sure about.
If you are concerned about a mole or skin lesion, you do not need to wait for it to change before seeking advice.
Can a dermatologist tell if a mole is cancerous just by looking at it?
Finding a suspicious mole does not automatically mean that you have skin cancer. Your dermatologist will explain what they have found and why they are concerned.
Depending on the lesion, they may recommend monitoring it or arranging a biopsy or complete removal for histological examination. If skin cancer is diagnosed, our dermatology team can discuss the diagnosis with you and advise you about the appropriate next steps.
Can you remove a suspicious mole at the same appointment?
A mole check is primarily an assessment and diagnosis appointment. If your dermatologist recommends removal or biopsy, this will usually be arranged as a separate procedure so that the appropriate time, equipment and treatment can be planned.
Your dermatologist will explain why removal is recommended, what the procedure involves and any additional costs before treatment is arranged.
Is mole removal included in the cost of a mole check?
No. The mole check consultation fee covers your consultation and assessment with the dermatologist. If a mole or skin lesion needs to be removed, biopsied or sent for histological analysis, these are separate services and additional costs may apply.

Are moles that are removed sent for histology?
Your dermatologist will discuss whether histological examination is required when recommending removal of a mole or skin lesion. Histology involves sending the removed tissue to a laboratory, where it is examined under a microscope to help establish a diagnosis. An additional fee may apply where histology is required.
Do I need a GP referral for a private mole check?
No. You do not need a GP or NHS referral to book a private mole check at Freyja Medical. You can book directly with our team if you have a particular mole you are concerned about or would like a professional assessment of your moles.
How often should I have my moles checked?
There isn’t one screening interval that is appropriate for everyone. How frequently professional checks may be appropriate depends on your individual circumstances, including your number and type of moles, medical and family history, previous skin cancers and other risk factors.
Your dermatologist can advise you on whether further professional mole checks or monitoring would be appropriate based on your individual risk.
Between professional appointments, it is useful to become familiar with your own skin so that you are more likely to notice a new or changing mole or lesion.
Can I have a mole check if I have lots of moles?
Yes. Having a large number of moles can make monitoring your own skin more difficult. A professional mole check allows a dermatologist to examine your visible moles and identify any lesions that may warrant closer examination, monitoring or further investigation.
Can I have a mole check if I have previously had skin cancer?
Yes. If you have previously had melanoma or another type of skin cancer, make sure you tell your dermatologist when you attend. Your previous diagnosis and treatment are relevant to your assessment and can help your dermatologist advise you about appropriate ongoing surveillance.
If you are already under the care of an NHS or another specialist skin cancer service, you should continue to attend any follow-up appointments they have recommended.
What should I wear to a mole check appointment?
Wear clothing that can be removed or adjusted easily so your dermatologist can examine your skin. It is also helpful to avoid heavy make-up over a facial lesion or nail polish over a nail you would like assessed, as these can make the area more difficult to examine.
If there is a mole or lesion underneath underwear or in another intimate area that concerns you, tell your dermatologist so that it can be appropriately assessed.
Can I book a mole check for a child or teenager?
Yes. Our dermatologists assess skin concerns across different age groups, including children and teenagers. If your child has a new, changing or unusual mole or skin lesion that concerns you, you can contact our team for advice about booking the appropriate consultation.
Do you offer mole checks in Wrexham?
Yes.
