Seborrhoeic Keratoses Treatment

Seborrhoeic keratoses are very common, harmless skin growths that often become more noticeable with age. Freyja Medical provides seborrhoeic keratoses treatment in Wrexham, Nantwich, Chester and Shrewsbury, with dermatologist-led assessment of growths that can vary in colour, size and appearance and may sometimes resemble moles, warts or other skin lesions.

No GP or NHS referral is required. You can book directly with our team for specialist advice and a personalised treatment plan.

What is seborrhoeic keratoses?

A seborrhoeic keratosis is a benign, non-cancerous growth caused by a build-up of skin cells. Sometimes referred to as a seborrhoeic wart, it is not actually a wart and is not caused by a virus.

These growths become increasingly common with age. Some people develop only one or two, while others may have several across different areas of the body.

They are harmless and do not develop into skin cancer. However, their appearance can sometimes resemble other skin lesions, including some forms of skin cancer, so new or changing growths should be appropriately assessed.

Seborrhoeic Keratoses Treatments

Dermatology Consultation

If you have a skin lesion that could be a seborrhoeic keratosis, a dermatology consultation allows it to be professionally assessed.

Our dermatologists can examine the lesion, confirm whether it is consistent with seborrhoeic keratosis and identify any features requiring further investigation.

Seborrhoeic keratoses are harmless and do not usually require treatment, but removal can be considered if they cause irritation, discomfort or for cosmetic reasons. Your dermatologist can discuss the most appropriate options with you.

Skin Surgery

Seborrhoeic keratoses are harmless and do not usually require treatment. However, removal may be considered if a lesion is causing irritation or discomfort, repeatedly catches on clothing, or you would prefer to have it removed for cosmetic reasons.

Where appropriate, seborrhoeic keratoses can be removed using minor skin surgery. Your dermatologist will assess the lesion and discuss the most suitable removal method based on its size, location and appearance.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is a quick treatment that can be used to remove suitable seborrhoeic keratoses without the need for skin surgery.

Liquid nitrogen is carefully applied to the seborrhoeic keratosis, freezing the affected tissue. Following treatment, the area may form a blister or crust before gradually healing and the lesion falls away.

Cryotherapy may be particularly suitable for smaller or thinner seborrhoeic keratoses. Your dermatologist will advise whether this is an appropriate option for your lesion.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Please reach us at [email protected] if you cannot find an answer to your question.
What does seborrhoeic keratosis look like?
Seborrhoeic keratoses can vary in appearance. They may be skin-coloured, pink, brown or almost black, with a smooth, waxy, rough or wart-like surface. They often appear raised or look as though they are ‘stuck on’ to the skin.
What causes seborrhoeic keratosis?
The exact cause of seborrhoeic keratosis is not fully understood. These growths become more common with age, and genetics may play a role in why some people develop multiple lesions. They are not infectious and cannot be passed from person to person.
Is seborrhoeic keratosis a type of skin cancer?
No. Seborrhoeic keratosis is a benign skin growth and does not develop into skin cancer. However, some lesions can resemble other skin conditions, including melanoma, so a new, changing or unusual growth should be professionally assessed.
What is the difference between seborrhoeic keratosis and solar keratosis?

Seborrhoeic keratosis and solar keratosis are different skin conditions. Seborrhoeic keratoses are harmless, benign growths, whereas solar keratoses (actinic keratoses) are caused by long-term sun damage and have a small risk of developing into squamous cell carcinoma.

What are the symptoms of seborrhoeic keratosis?
Most seborrhoeic keratoses do not cause symptoms. However, some can become itchy, irritated or uncomfortable, particularly if they rub against clothing or jewellery. They may also bleed if scratched or caught.
Does seborrhoeic keratosis need treatment?
Seborrhoeic keratosis does not usually require treatment because it is harmless. Treatment may be considered if the growth becomes irritated or uncomfortable, regularly catches on clothing, or you would prefer to have it removed for cosmetic reasons.
How is seborrhoeic keratosis removed?
Seborrhoeic keratosis removal may involve treatments such as cryotherapy or curettage, depending on the size, thickness and location of the growth. Your dermatologist can assess the lesion and recommend an appropriate treatment option.
Can seborrhoeic keratosis grow back after removal?
A seborrhoeic keratosis can occasionally regrow in the same area following removal. It is also possible for new seborrhoeic keratoses to develop elsewhere on the skin over time.
When should I get a seborrhoeic keratosis checked?
You should consider professional assessment if you are unsure whether a growth is a seborrhoeic keratosis, particularly if it is new, changing, bleeding or looks noticeably different from your other skin lesions.
Where can I get seborrhoeic keratosis treatment?
Freyja Medical provides seborrhoeic keratosis assessment and treatment in Wrexham, Nantwich, Chester and Shrewsbury. Our dermatologists can assess the lesion, confirm the diagnosis and discuss treatment or removal where appropriate.
Do I need a GP referral for seborrhoeic keratosis treatment?
