Customer Reviews of our Shrewsbury Dermatologist
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“Freyja Medical is such an amazing clinic. All the staff are very polite and it has a lovely atmosphere.
I had my second appointment with Dr Thorsteinsson which went great. He’s friendly, professional and efficient.
I’m happy with the information/progress/treatment so far. Would definitely recommend and thanks again”
– Elena Mertakkas, Freyja Medical Customer
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“The care I have received from Freyja Medical has been second to none. I developed a Basal Cell Carcinoma under my left eye which was subsequently confirmed by Dr Thornsteinsson following a biopsy. Obviously being so close to my eye was a significant concern , but Dr T was extremely thorough in giving me all the appropriate advice.
He removed my BCC a week ago and I had my sutures removed yesterday. He has done such neat job, I am really pleased with the result even this early on in the healing process. I am so glad I elected to have him perform my procedure.
If you have any skin concerns of any type, I cannot recommend Freyja more highly and as a fellow health practitioner, I refer many of my patients because I know they will receive the professional care they deserve.”

How do I know if I should see a dermatologist about my skin concern?
If a skin condition is persistent, worsening, painful, affecting your confidence, or not responding to over-the-counter treatments, it may be time to see a dermatologist. Many people in Shrewsbury seek specialist help for ongoing acne, unexplained rashes, rosacea flare-ups, changing moles, or chronic conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
What should I bring to my dermatology appointment in Shrewsbury?
It can help to bring a list of current medications, details of previous treatments you’ve tried, and photographs of flare-ups if symptoms come and go. If you’re attending for a mole or skin lesion concern, noting changes in size, colour, shape, or symptoms can also be useful for your dermatologist, for more information on how to check your moles at home click here.
What’s the difference between a dermatologist and a beautician for skin concerns?
A dermatologist is a medically qualified doctor specialising in diagnosing and treating skin, hair, and nail conditions. While beauticians may help support general skincare, they are not trained to medically diagnose skin diseases or identify potentially serious concerns such as skin cancer.
Do dermatologists only treat medical skin conditions?
No. While dermatologists diagnose and treat medical skin conditions, they also help patients manage concerns that affect confidence and quality of life, such as acne scarring, pigmentation, redness, sun damage, and certain benign skin lesions.
Can I book a dermatology consultation for reassurance?
Absolutely. Many patients book a dermatology appointment simply for peace of mind about a mole, rash, or ongoing skin concern. Early assessment can help avoid delays in diagnosis and treatment.
Why is personalised dermatology treatment important?
No two skin conditions, or patients, are exactly alike. Factors such as skin type, medical history, lifestyle, triggers, and previous treatments all influence the best treatment approach. Personalised dermatology care helps ensure treatment plans are realistic, effective, and appropriate for the individual.
Do dermatologists perform skin surgery in Shrewsbury?
Yes, dermatologists can perform a range of minor skin surgery procedures for both medical and cosmetic concerns. This may include removing suspicious moles, cysts, lipomas, skin tags, benign lesions, and certain skin cancers. Procedures are carried out in a clinical setting using local anaesthetic for patient comfort.
Do I need a GP referral to see a dermatologist in Shrewsbury?
No, you do not need a GP referral to book a private dermatology appointment in Shrewsbury with Freyja Medical. Many patients choose to self-refer for faster access to expert advice, diagnosis, and treatment for concerns such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, mole checks, skin lesions, and other ongoing skin conditions.
Do you accept private health insurance for dermatology appointments in Shrewsbury?
Freyja Medical is not directly affiliated with private health insurance companies, so patients are responsible for managing their own insurance claims and reimbursement requests. We recommend contacting your insurance provider before your appointment to check whether your dermatology consultation or treatment may be eligible for reimbursement under your policy. This approach allows our team to focus entirely on delivering high-quality, patient-centred dermatology care without the restrictions often associated with insurance providers. Do you offer paediatric dermatology in Shrewsbury?
Yes, our consultant dermatologists provide paediatric dermatology appointments for children and teenagers in Shrewsbury. We understand that skin conditions in younger patients can be distressing for both children and parents, which is why we aim to provide reassuring, expert-led care tailored to each child’s needs. Common concerns we see include eczema, acne, rashes, warts, birthmarks, skin infections, and persistent or unexplained skin irritation.
Can you help manage chronic skin conditions in Shrewsbury?
Yes, our dermatologists regularly help patients manage long-term skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, acne, and dermatitis. Chronic skin conditions often require ongoing support rather than a one-off treatment, which is why we focus on creating personalised management plans tailored to your symptoms, triggers, lifestyle, and treatment goals. The aim is not only to help control flare-ups, but also to improve long-term skin health and day-to-day confidence.
Can you diagnose and treat skin cancer in Shrewsbury?
Yes, our consultant dermatologists can assess suspicious moles and skin lesions, provide expert diagnosis, and advise on the most appropriate next steps. If a lesion requires removal, we also offer skin surgery for certain types of skin cancer and other suspicious skin changes. Early assessment is important, particularly if you notice a mole or lesion changing in size, shape, colour, or behaviour over time.
