Cryotherapy
At Freyja Medical, we offer cryotherapy treatment in Wrexham, Nantwich, Chester and Shrewsbury for a range of suitable skin lesions, including actinic keratoses, seborrhoeic keratoses, warts and verrucas. Using liquid nitrogen to precisely freeze targeted areas of skin, cryotherapy is a quick and effective treatment. Our experienced dermatology team will assess your skin first to confirm whether cryotherapy is appropriate for you.
What is cryotherapy and how does it work?
Cryotherapy is a treatment that uses extremely cold liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy targeted areas of skin. It is commonly used in dermatology to treat a range of benign and sun-damaged skin lesions.
During treatment, liquid nitrogen is carefully applied directly to the lesion, freezing the targeted tissue. The treated cells are damaged by the freezing process and gradually break down, allowing healthy skin to heal in the area.
Cryotherapy is usually a quick procedure and can often be carried out during a dermatology appointment where clinically appropriate.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What skin conditions can cryotherapy treat?
Cryotherapy can be used to treat several skin conditions and lesions, including actinic keratoses (solar keratoses), seborrhoeic keratoses, warts and verrucas. Other superficial lesions may also be suitable depending on their type, size and location.
How does cryotherapy work?
Liquid nitrogen is applied directly to the skin lesion, rapidly freezing the targeted tissue. This damages the treated cells, which gradually break down as the area heals.
Does cryotherapy hurt?
Cryotherapy can cause a brief stinging or burning sensation while the skin is being frozen. The area may remain tender afterwards, but discomfort is usually temporary.
What happens after cryotherapy treatment?
After cryotherapy, the treated area may become red, swollen or blistered before forming a scab. This is part of the normal healing process, and the scab should be allowed to come away naturally.
How long does cryotherapy take to heal?
Healing time varies depending on the size, location and depth of the area treated. Many areas heal within a few weeks, although some parts of the body can take longer.
How many cryotherapy treatments will I need?
Some skin lesions respond to a single cryotherapy treatment, while others may require more than one session. Your clinician will advise you based on the type of lesion and how it responds to treatment.
Can cryotherapy leave a scar?
Scarring is possible but is generally uncommon. Cryotherapy can also cause temporary or permanent changes in skin colour, particularly where deeper or repeated freezing is required. Your clinician will discuss the potential risks before treatment.
Can any skin lesion be treated with cryotherapy?
No. Cryotherapy is only suitable for certain skin lesions. An accurate diagnosis is important, as suspicious or uncertain lesions may require further investigation or a different treatment rather than cryotherapy.
Do I need a consultation before cryotherapy?
Yes. Your skin will need to be assessed to confirm the diagnosis and determine whether cryotherapy is appropriate. If another treatment or further investigation is recommended, your clinician will discuss this with you.
